was spent traveling between Gary and Bloomington, Indiana. He developed
a passion for the martial arts at a very young age. An upbringing
on the rougher side of the tracks made it essential to be to defend
himself from bullies. Although never having the desire to be one
himself. His first martial art was the Japanese martial art called
Judo, a throwing and grappling art. He quickly gained a reputation
with the "gentle art" after swiftly dispatching a belligerent
classmate in the 3rd grade. He earnestly absorbed as much of the
art as he could, cultivating a love for Judo as well as all martial
arts.

| While living in Wisconsin he was introduced
to the Afro-Brazilian martial art of Capoeira that utilized his already
accomplished gymnasts' movements along with sweeping kicks, and takedowns.
Capoeira is "played" in a roda or circle accompanied by
musicians. This exposure was brief yet profound, and he never forgot
these early lessons of that then obscure martial art of his heritage.
Having moved around a lot while young, he developed a keen sense
of awareness and adaptability as well as tolerance of new surroundings,
people, and ideas. Throughout this period he was exposed to various
martial arts such as Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, and Hapkido. While
constantly practicing the various moves to keep his skills sharp
he was also sharpening his moral and ethical fortitude. He always
strove to avoid conflict and adverse situations. Opting to defuse
or find alternative means of conflict resolution even to this day.
In 1985 he, with his family, moved to Minnesota where he almost
by accident stumbled upon a flyer for a little-known training hall
now internationally known as the Minnesota Kali Group headed by
Sifu Rick Faye. He began his training with Rick with almost immediately,
and it seemed to the point of fanaticism. He achieved his first
certificate under the tutelage and watchful eye of Ajarn Chai Sirisute,
the head of the Thai Boxing Association of America. He then went
to Japan for a time to visit with friends and taught both English
and martial arts at Sensei Takashi Uchino's T.S.D. Kali, an affiliate
school in Osaka. After a short stint there he returned to Minnesota
to finish a degree in graphic design and to resume his training
under Sifu Faye.
To help work his way through school he acquired employment as a
bouncer. He prefers the term 'doorman'. A career move he wasn't
too sure he was suited for. However, he soon became accustomed to
the "trade" finding ample use of his even-keeled demeanor
and years of martial arts experience. He found solace in the fact
that he could use his growing skills in an environment to help the
"good" partygoers enjoy their fun and be safe in the sometimes
un-predictable and volatile life of the night. He excelled at his
job and over the last 11 years has been recruited to work the door
at a number of notably famous night spots such as First Avenue,
the late Nick Beaver's Rogue, and Prince's Glam Slam, just to name
a few. In 1995 he received and apprentice-level instructorship under
Guro Dan Inosanto, both a joyous and un-expected milestone in his
martial arts career. During this time he also had the opportunity
to train with one of the foremost "operators" in the business,
Mr. Marcus Wynne, where he was intensively exposed to NLP (Neuro-Linguistic
Programming) as it pertains to training in the martial arts and
executive protection.
Soon after graduating with a degree in Advertising Design, he began
work as an illustrator for Jostens in their recognition division.
A job that, after 3 years, he loathed to leave but felt he must
in order to better his alternate career goals as a designer, and
to pursue his Bachelor's degree in Visual Communication. He mournfully
re-located to Arizona. While in Arizona he developed friendships,
and soon, training partners with many people who had heard of the
martial arts that he had studied, but didn't have access to the
places and people to which to train. Opting to continue his training
and pursue his instructorship, Rudy retuned again to Minnesota and
the teachings of Rick Faye. Rudy has fought numerous times in the
armature ranks in Thai Boxing both in the states and abroad, and
one "professional" boxing bout. ;0) He has used his talents
and experiences to help several junior fighters reach their competative
goals.
Currently, he works as a web designer for a dating company, and
is developing his own educational martial arts site which is due
to launch soon. He is also working on a publication collecting all
of the various tactics and techniques that have aided him at the
door in order to share and learn from his various experiences.
